9 Things You Should Know About Dr. Yilikal Kefale President of Amhara

Dr. Yilikal Kefale President of Amhara Region

Following the 6^th Ethiopian National election, the Amhara region chose Dr. Yilikal Kefale to be the region's president.

In the past few years, the Amhara Region of Ethiopia had to change its president more frequently. After the death of Dr. Ambachew, Ato Temesgen became the leader but after a few months of service, he had to take power in the federal government so he was replaced by Ato Lake Ayalew for a very short period of time. He was at that time the vice president of the region then he was substituted by Ato Agegnehu Teshager who served for around a year.

1. Birthplace and Growth

Dr. Yilikal Kefale was born and raised in a town called Achefer which is located in West Gojjam.

2. Higher Education

He got his bachelor's degree in history and master's degree in social anthropology from Addis Ababa University.

He got his Ph.D. in social anthropology from a  university located in India.

3. Work Experience

From 1989 to 1996 Yilikal worked as a teacher in Gondar Teacher’s College.

From 1996 to 1998 he worked as a vice-dean and dean in Debrebirhan Teacher’s College.

From 1999 to 2005 he worked as vice president of academic research at Debre Markos University. In 2005 He became the university’s president and served in that position until 2006.

4. Prior government and regional position

Prior to his current position, he was working as leader of the Amhara Region Education Bureau from 2009 to 2014 E.C.

5. His Election Location

Like most government officials in Ethiopia, he took his election campaign to his birthplace. In the 6^th national and regional election Dr. Yilkal Kefale represented the prosperity party in Debub Achefer woreda and won the election.

6. Election speech

After being chosen as the region’s president in his speech he said his priority is to work with the federal government to bring an end to the conflict that is currently being held in Wollo within a short period of time and return the people of Amhara who are dislocated from their living area back to their home. He also promised to bring safety for the people.

According to his statement after bringing an end to this horrible conflict he is planning to repair the economy and give the people the materials they lost during this period.

He said Amhara regional government has a 10-year plan to improve agriculture in the region. Furthermore, there will be a lot of work to bring good service, efficient administration, and a good marketplace to alleviate the reckless inflation that has become rampant in the area.

7. Interview with Amhara Media Corporation

After his election he had an interview with Amhara Media Corporation in that interview he stated that this election is democratic because there was a lot of work done to make sure the people elect whoever they want. According to Dr. Yilkal Kefale, last year's election improved greatly from the 1997 election which he also considered being the beginning of the democratic election.

He said Amhara people are facing difficult times so leadership should be committed to paying any price and serving the people they represent.

8. His Message to Amhara People

During this interview, Dr. Yilkal Kefale also sent a message to the people of Amhara by saying people should support the leaders as they can’t produce any change by themselves. He said TPLF’s plan is to dismantle Ethiopia so during this challenging time everybody should do their part the including the farmers by producing food, merchants by holding the economy, and activists by giving correct information to the people.

9. Sharing Power to Opponent Parties

For the first time in the region, they gave few powers to competitive parties. One of them was Ato Tahir who became Amhara Region’s tourism Bureau. Ato Tahir is one of the Amhara National Movement Association members.
